Our Story
1981: Where It All Began
Our legacy started when Bill and Sharon Cothran opened their first insurance office in Lynchburg, Virginia. Over the years, they built a strong reputation throughout the community by focusing on exceptional, neighborly service and protecting local families.
1999: A New Generation and a Parallel Path
After graduating from William and Mary, Bill and Sharon’s son, Wes Cothran, joined the family business, discovering a passion for helping local businesses protect their livelihoods. Meanwhile, in Danville, Virginia, Rachel Schoonover was launching her own highly successful insurance career. Driven by a similar dedication to her clients, Rachel rapidly expanded her agency to protect families and businesses across Danville, Collinsville, and beyond.
2019: Embracing Independence
Recognizing that one insurance company can’t be the perfect fit for everyone, both Wes and Rachel made the strategic decision to transition their respective agencies to an independent model. By partnering with top-rated carriers such as Cincinnati, Auto-Owners, Travelers, Grange, and Universal Property, they unlocked the ability to shop the market and offer clients more choices, better coverage, and highly competitive rates. During this time of growth, our footprint expanded to include offices in Amherst, VA, and Walnut Cove, NC.
2021: Merging Strengths
Wes and Rachel officially merged their agencies to form Cothran Schoonover Insurance. This partnership brought together their complementary strengths: Wes’s technological expertise and focus on modern operations, paired perfectly with Rachel’s talent for community building and business development.
